Choosing the Right Soil Mix: Seed Starting vs. Succulents

Soil is not just dirt. The mix you use has a huge effect on how well seeds germinate and whether succulents thrive or rot. Seedlings and succulents need almost opposite things, so it helps to understand both.

What seedlings need

Young seedlings have tiny, delicate roots. They need a mix that is fine, light, sterile and evenly moist. Garden soil is too heavy, compacts easily, and can carry fungi that cause damping off.

Typical seed-starting mix:

  • Peat moss or coco coir (holds moisture)
  • Fine vermiculite or perlite (keeps it light and airy)
  • Little or no fertilizer — seeds carry their own food at first

DIY recipe: 2 parts coco coir + 1 part fine vermiculite + 1 part fine perlite. Moisten well before use.

What succulents need

Succulents come from places with fast-draining, mineral soils and infrequent rain. Their roots rot if they sit in moisture. They need a mix that is coarse, gritty and dries out quickly.

Typical succulent and cactus mix:

  • A small amount of potting soil or coir for some organic matter
  • Plenty of grit: pumice, perlite, coarse sand, crushed lava rock or calcined clay

DIY recipe: 1 part potting soil + 1 part pumice or perlite + 1 part coarse sand. For lithops and other very sensitive succulents, increase grit to 70–80%.

The squeeze test

Take a handful of moist mix and squeeze. A good seed-starting mix holds together loosely and crumbles when poked. A good succulent mix barely holds together at all and water runs through it instantly.

Pots matter too

  • Always use pots with drainage holes.
  • Terracotta is excellent for succulents because it breathes and dries quickly.
  • Plastic cells and trays work well for seed starting because they hold moisture evenly.

Avoid these mistakes

  • Adding gravel to the bottom of a pot “for drainage” — it actually raises the wet zone.
  • Reusing old seed-starting mix without sterilizing it.
  • Planting succulents in moisture-control potting soil.

The right mix is the cheapest insurance for healthy plants, whether you are starting seeds or caring for succulents.
